In addition to a rod deficit plaguing Paraguay's market, the country is also facing a shortage of wire rods for wire making, the manager of local company Walt Metalúrgica SRL, Walter Bogarín, told BNamericas.
The shortage is causing problems with the production of steel wire used for various purposes.
The executive also said there is still a shortage of rebar for construction, "so [the country's only steelmaker] Acepar can't keep up with market growth," he said.
Rebar demand on the domestic market has grown to over 5,000t/m while Acepar only provides 3,000-3,500t/m.
In September a spokesperson from Paraguay's industry and trade ministry (MIC) said the rebar supply crisis will stretch into November, when local company Aceros Industrializados (Acerin) begins producing for the domestic market.
Acepar produces plain rods for construction and other uses in addition to rods and billets for rolling. The company churns out 100,000t/y on average.
