Mexican steel company Grupo Simec has contracted German plant makers SMS Meer and SMS Concast to build a mini-mill in the Brazilian state of São Paulo.
The mini-mill will be named GV do Brasil and consist of a steelmaking plant, supplied by SMS Concast, and a bar and wire rod mill supplied by SMS Meer, the former said in a company newsletter.
GV do Brasil will be designed with an annual capacity of 520,000t of billets and 400,000t of rebar. Rebar capacity can reportedly be expanded to 560,000t/y.
The plant's electrical and automation systems will also be supplied by SMS Meer, the newsletter said. The price of the contract was not revealed. Commissioning is scheduled for the middle of 2013.
