Colombia's mining and energy planning unit (UPME) will have the national mining development plan ready in H1, UPME head Óscar Imitola told BNamericas.
"We will release the plan in the next two months. Then we will receive comments and the final adjustments will be made. We expect the entire mining development plan to be released before mid-year," Imitola said.
The plan involves reforming the institutions responsible for ensuring efficiency in mining, starting with creating the national mines agency (ANM).
"A decision was made to carry out restructuring in several phases. The first was the creation of ANM and the deputy mines ministry, which is in the final stages of listening to the opinions of sector players and consolidating [the changes]," he said.
Now the government needs to approve UPME's restructuring which involves transforming the UPME from a highly specialized unit focused on energy into an institution that carries out comprehensive planning for the mining and energy sectors.
The national mining development plan began at the end of January 2011. Its objectives also involve increasing technical capacity and generating more added value in the sector.
