US company Johnson & Johnson (J&J) will develop packaging for its Sundown sun block line in Brazil using Brazilian petrochemical company Braskem's (NYSE: BAK) polyethylene (PE) based on sugarcane ethanol, Braskem said in a statement.
Products using packaging made of the "green" resin will hit the shelves in 2011-12.
"Johnson & Johnson will have exclusivity for the resin in the sun block market in Brazil and continues to evaluate the use of the 'green' PE in other product lines and in other regions around the world," Braskem's PE business director Rui Chammas was quoted as saying.
According to Braskem, the sugarcane-based PE has the same characteristics as the petrochemical-based product, which can be used in all currently known applications without the need to adapt machinery or plastic manufacturing processes.
Braskem's green PE plant is currently under construction at the Triunfo petrochemical pole, in Rio Grande do Sul state, and will produce 200,000t/y. Operations are scheduled to begin at the end of 2010.
