Paraguay's public works and communications minister (MOPC) Efrain Alegre and Argentina's federal planning minister, Julio de Vido, will meet on September 10 to discuss dredging a binational stretch of the Paraguay-Parana waterway, MOPC's project manager and concessions advisor, Ruben Ocampo, told BNamericas.
The ministers will also discuss ways to improve connectivity between the two countries, particularly through the joint management of the shared waterway stretch.
Paraguay shares the 400km Pilcomayo-Confluencia section of the waterway with Argentina, and is looking for a joint solution to improve navigability, Alegre told BNamericas earlier this week.
One option for the binational stretch would be to divide the waterway into two 200km sections, with each country responsible for maintenance along one section, according to Ocampo.
Paraguayan authorities are carrying out studies with World Bank support to determine the feasibility of concessioning its 550km section of the waterway. If the proposal to divide the joint section goes ahead, Paraguay could add its other 200km stretch to the concession package.
Dredging work along the waterway is essential to boost Paraguay's fluvial port industry and its access to maritime ports in Uruguay, where the country uses mainly the Montevideo and Nueva Palmira ports, Ocampo said.
