Monday, February 11, 2013

Multinational direct-to-home (DTH) TV service operator DirecTV and state-owned telco CNT have driven growth in Ecuador's pay TV market in the 12 months through January.

DirectTV increased its subscriber numbers three-fold in that time to 232,388, while CNT reached 44,794 subscribers at the end of January after entering the pay TV market in December 2012, according to regulator Supertel statistics.

The two satellite TV service providers accounted for 88.5% of new pay TV subscriptions in the country between January 2011 and January 2012.

DTH TV subscriptions reached 227,182 at the end of January, accounting for 34.9% of total pay TV subscriptions.

Meanwhile, the cable TV segment - comprised of several smaller operators - continued to grow, but at a slower rate, increasing subscriber numbers by 15.3% to 323,107 at the end of January.

Total pay TV subscriptions grew by 54.2% in the 12 months through January to 650,870.

With 49.6% of the pay TV market, the number of cable subscriptions remains larger than satellite, although this could be expected to change in the coming months if Ecuador's DTH TV providers are able to maintain their strong growth rate during 2013.
