Panama's public services regulator Asep has awarded contracts to provide advisory services in the process to sell majority share packages of distributors Edechi, Edemet and Ensa whose concessions expire in October 2013, BNamericas has learned.
According to sector legislation, a year before 15-year distribution concessions expire, the watchdog will issue a call to sell at least a 51% stake in the company that holds the concession. A new 15-year concession will then be granted.
Fundación Universidad de San Juan landed the technical studies component and Consorcio Inverlink-ME-VV&GM the investment and legal work, according to information from the watchdog.
At end-June, Edemet and Ensa accounted for the bulk of clients with 364,957 and 358,170, respectively, or 44% and 43% of total customers. Edechi had 110,257 clients or 13%. Edemet's lines at the end of 1H11 stretched 15,414km, representing 51% of the country's total, Ensa 9,324km (31%) and Edechi 5,360km (18%).
Also from Panama, the cabinet authorized the transfer of US$35.8mn to the rates stabilization fund to maintain prices for clients that use up to 500kWh/month and to compensate distributors for reduced amounts due to rate adjustments.
