Botnets represent the top cyber threat in Chile, the deputy commissioner of the Chilean police's cyber crimes unit, Segundo Mansilla, told a gathering of reporters and IT execs.
"There are people being observed and manipulated," he said.
Other top IT attack methods in Chile include key logging software, as well as Trojans and other forms of malicious coding. Mansilla added that the Chilean police have seen cases of homegrown pharming attacks.
Chile is working to beef up its cyber crimes unit, the official said, pointing out that the division currently has 40 fulltime workers, up from nine in 2000.
The Latin America VP of Czech antivirus and security software developer Eset, Ignacio Sbampato, recently told BNamericas that the company has seen botnets being commanded from almost all countries in the region.
"What this shows us is how this problem has converted into a much more local issue during the past few years," he said.
Meanwhile, a study published in April by US security solutions provider Symantec (Nasdaq: SYMC) found that Brazil accounted for the highest percentage of botnets - as well as spam zombies, phishing and overall IT attacks - in Latin America.
