The Central American software cluster has set the European market atop its priority list, with prime export opportunities in recovering economies such as Germany and Switzerland, the director president of Salvadorian software association SvSoft, Federico Craik, told BNamericas.
The cluster, which includes SvSoft, its Guatemalan counterpart Sofex and Honduran IT association OHETI, was conceived in 2008, and is receiving funding from German technical cooperation agency GTZ.
Craik said the cluster has dedicated many months towards defining its strategy, and member organizations will meet mid-September to kick off the organization's first stage of action.
"We are going to kick off our strategic plan," he said. "There are two main lines of work. The first is training and certification in order to export services. Once we achieve that, we will export services to Europe."
Training focuses include CMMI, Java, .Net and PHP, according to the executive, who added that the full certification process will take about one year.
Costa Rica's IT and communications chamber Camtic and Panama's technology and telecoms chamber Capatec are also participating in the cluster, though as observers.
SVSOFT'S EUROPEAN PUSH
SvSoft is also pursuing European business opportunities independently of the software cluster, Craik said. The organization last month cut the ribbon on a European branch in Frankfurt, and intends to use the office as a springboard to other countries.
"We opened SvSoft Europa as a company with German capital," he said. "The purpose of this company is to offer application development services initially to the German market, and later to other countries in the European Union."
SvSoft will be providing support and manpower to European software developers short on resources, as well as application development services directly to medium-sized companies. Vertical markets of focus include the financial sector, according to Craik.
"We have seen more demand among medium-sized companies that are seeking applications for the control of internal processes, inventory and clients," he said. "These are the biggest needs that we've seen."
The executive added that inroads made into the European market are a direct result of SvSoft's participation in the CeBIT conference, which took place in Hannover, Germany earlier this year.
BNamericas previously reported that Costa Rica, Guatemala and El Salvador have the largest software industries in Central America, with market sizes seen reaching US$44.4mn, US$31.5mn and US$21.6mn last year, respectively.
