The Latin American division of SAP (NYSE: SAP) sees the acquisition of US enterprise infrastructure and wireless software provider Sybase (NYSE: SY) as key to satiating clients' mobility demands, SAP's Latin American CEO Rodolpho Cardenuto told BNamericas.
SAP divides its strategy into three components: on-premise solutions, on-demand solutions and on-device solutions, and Cardenuto said the company is stepping up its offer in the latter area.
"We're making investments in the area of mobility," he said. "Clients are demanding this... to have easy access and the ability to modify information on mobile devices."
In May, SAP announced plans to pay US$65.00 cash for each of Sybase's outstanding shares, totaling approximately US$5.8bn.
The acquisition depends on the tender of a majority of the outstanding shares of Sybase's common stock on a fully diluted basis, and clearance from antitrust bodies. Approval from SAP's shareholders is not required.
POST-CRISIS ENVIRONMENT
Cardenuto said SAP has seen Latin American companies shift gears in terms of IT expenditures, and noted that the region has entered an investment period.
"This is a catch-up scenario. They want to make up for lost time," he said. "The key word is growth. You don't hear about costs anymore."
SMEs in particular are turning to technology to compete with larger firms, grow market share and expand regionally, the executive said.
Increased spending has translated into higher sales for many company solutions, but the executive emphasized growth in its BusinessObjects product line, where SAP Latin America roughly doubled year-over-year both sales and the number of prospects during the first quarter.
