E-commerce sales in Chile totaled US$1.6bn last year, up 23% over the US$1.3bn reported in 2012, according to preliminary estimates of the Santiago Chamber of Commerce (CCS), as reported by Diario Financiero.
The figure was also up 56.8% over 2011. CCS head of studies George Lever said the growth was due to a dynamic consumer market, the addition of new buyers and sellers and more frequent purchases.
The CCS has called 2013 a defining year for e-commerce in Chile.
Latin American countries have been increasingly adopting the Black Friday and Cyber Monday phenomenon copied from the US.
Chile held its Cyber Monday at the end of November, a week earlier than the traditional one in the US that comes after Black Friday, and saw some 250,000 items purchased for sales totaling US$56mn, the Santiago Chamber of Commerce said at the time.
