Government/Regulations | Mobile/WirelessEcuadorian state-owned mobile telephony operator Alegro PCS has signed a memorandum of understanding with Venezuela's state-controlled telco Cantv to develop a strategic alliance, Alegro PCS president Augusto Espín confirmed to BNamericas.
The agreement was signed within the framework of several cooperation agreements between the two countries.
Alegro had been looking to find a strategic partner in a move to improve its efficiency. Earlier this year, Ecuador's President Rafael Correa threatened that Alegro would be sold if did not turn a profit within a year's time. According to previous press reports, the firm has seen US$200mn in losses since its creation.
Espín said that Alegro expects its strategic partner to invest in the company. "We are also looking for a partner with a broad vision and knowledge of the telecoms business in order to transfer known-how," he added.
Alegro expects the agreement with its technological partner to be signed this year, the executive said.
Uruguay's state-owned operator Antel and Indonesia's Telkom were also interested in partnering with Alegro.
Alegro has a commercial agreement with Movistar, through which the state-owned telco rents GSM infrastructure. According to latest figures from telecoms supervisory body Supertel, Alegro PCS had 319,146 subscribers at end-August, placing a distant third in the mobile market.
