United States-based technology supplier Lucent Technologies (NYSE: LU) is negotiating the sale of its Brazilian fiber optic cable factory at Campinas, Sao Paulo, as well as four other factories in other countries. (Source: local press)
United States-based telecoms equipment supplier Zhone plans to invest US$2mn in Latin America this year. The company aims to bill US$4mn in 2001, 40% of which will come from Argentina, according to Jorge Rivadulla, director of Zhone's Buenos Aires office. The Argentina office will be responsible for serving seven countries. Zhone opened sales and support offices in Sao Paulo, Buenos Aires, Mexico City and Monterrey last year. The offices are managed from the company's Caribbean and Latin America headquarters in Miami. Zhone provides video, and data delivery solutions for local-loop networks. (Source: El Cronista)
Argentine telco Techtel yesterday launched commercial voice, data and Internet services in Cordoba province, where the company plans to invest US$70mn over the next three years. Last week Techtel began offering telecoms services in the city of Rosario and plans to start operations in Mendoza during the next few days. Techtel plans to invest US$400mn in Argentina during the 2000-2005 period, and has indicated that it will also enter Venezuela, Chile and Uruguay in the near future. Techtel is a joint venture between Mexico's Telmex (NYSE: TMX) (60%) and Argentine industrial group Techint (40%). (Source: El Cronista)
Gunnar Vikberg, president of Brazilian Band-B mobile operator Americel, is scheduled to leave the company next Monday, April 30. His departure corresponds to the sale by Canada's Telesystem International Wireless (NASDAQ: TIWI) of its stake in Americel to fellow Americel shareholder Bell Canada International (NASDAQ: BCICF) (BCI), on behalf of the Telecom Americas consortium.
