Research Reports

The Global mobile Suppliers Association (GSA) has confirmed that there are 42 LTE network commitments in 21 countries, including Brazil's Vivo (NYSE: VIV), which is about to start its trial program, the GSA said in a statement.

Other testing and trials programs in Latin America, which are not yet classified by the GSA as "commitments" to deploy, are planned for Chile and Argentina. Both Entel Chile and Telefónica Chile have said they intend to start trials.

"So it is clear that operators in Latin America are keen to test and try out LTE technology for themselves, which is a positive step since it is important for operators to understand firsthand how the LTE technology will contribute to the business plans and models, even before the spectrum allocations are made," GSA's president, Alan Hadden, told BNamericas.

"The GSA considers LTE as the next step in the user experience of mobile broadband, and necessary to address the true mass market. We also believe that the deployment of LTE in the market is not 'if' so much as 'when' it will be deployed," Hadden added.

3G HSPA mobile broadband services are commercially available on 283 networks in 119 countries worldwide, according to the GSA. The organization has confirmed that 54 operators in 33 countries have committed to HSPA Evolution (HSPA+) network deployments, including 26 HSPA+ systems already in commercial service.

According to Hadden, the evolution of HSPA+ will also be a significant step for the majority of operators in Latin America as it will enable those companies to see greater operational efficiencies in the networks.
