Peru announces 4G spectrum tender prequalifiers

By -

Peru's private investment promotion agency ProInversión revealed in a press release the names of prequalifying firms for Peru's upcoming 4G spectrum tender.

Listed firms were Mexican telecoms giant América Móvil's (NYSE: AMX) local unit América Móvil Perú, Vietnamese state-run operator Viettel's local unit Viettel Perú, Spanish telecom major Telefónica's (NYSE: TEF) unit Telefónica Móviles and Chilean telco Entel's subsidiary Americatel.

On July 22 firms will be permitted to present their 20-year concession bids for twin 20MHz+20MHz blocks of spectrum in the 1710-1770MHz and 2110-2170MHz bands, ProInversión previously stated.

Major players Telefónica and América Móvil have dominated Peru's telecoms sector in recent years. However the upcoming 4G tender may provide newer entrants Viettel and Entel an opportunity to get a larger foothold.

Viettel launched telecoms services in Peru earlier this year, while Chilean telco Entel acquired in April NII Holdings' Peruvian subsidiary Nextel Peru for US$400mn.
