Guatemala's politicians and political parties lack tangible environment plans but instead present ambiguous positions that do not guarantee compliance once these individuals take office, according to environmental groups in the country.
Decentralization and increased participation is paramount, conservation and eco-development foundation Fundaeco representative Vinicio Cerezo Blandon said. Oil concessions for example have been held behind closed doors without even consulting the country's environmental institutions, he added.
Cutting the natural resource protection program (Conap) year 2000 budget undermines protection efforts, environmental law and sustainable development, ecologist Edmundo Vasquez said.
