Paraguay's public works and communications ministry (MOPC) and state water utility Essap are working on projects worth some US$80mn to reduce the country's water and sanitation deficit, public works and communications minister Efrain Alegre told BNamericas.
The projects will be financed through a World Bank loan, Alegre said.
Paraguay's steep potable water and sanitation deficit has become a major concern, especially in terms of sewerage collection. The government is now working with international financial entities in an effort to address the problem, the minister said.
Works are expected to include the expansion and replacement of potable water and sewage networks, as well as the construction of new potable water and wastewater treatment plants.
Specific projects will be announced as tenders to award their construction and works begin.
Paraguay has 69% domestic potable water coverage, while just 13% of the population have access to household sewerage facilities, according to the UN.
