Salvadorian waste management company Mides has closed the Mariona waste dump, which during its time received most of capital San Salvador's solid waste, El Diario de Hoy reported.
Mides is a joint venture between San Salvador's municipal government and Canadian firm Cintec. Mides intends to rehabilitate the dumpsite and convert the area into a sports complex.
Rehabilitation will include covering the site with a layer of clay and planting vegetation, drainage works, biogas ventilatin, fencing and monitoring groundwater and soil quality.
San Salvador has some 456,000 residents.
