Construction of the Potrerillos dam in western Argentina's Mendoza province is 96% complete, provincial infrastructure development deputy-secretary Carlos Santilli told BNamericas.
The CEMPPSA consortium, made up of local companies Industrias Metalurgicas Pescarmona (Impsa) and Cartellone, began construction of the US$268mn dam in 1999. CEMPPSA will also operate the dam.
Potrerillos is a priority work for the province as it will supply drinking water to the city of Mendoza 35km away, provide irrigation water, generate power and control rises of the Mendoza river, said Santilli, adding that the dam has virtually completed its filling process, and that power generation began last year.
The dam will have a maximum holding capacity of 6.27M cu. m, and the area taken up by the lake formed by the dam takes up 1,500ha.
