The new administration of Colombian capital Bogotá expects to implement waste management policies aimed at reaching 100% of recycling or reutilization, said the newly appointed head of the city's public services department UAESP, Guillermo Asprilla.
"The main objective is to implement our project called "zero waste," which means that the totality of human-generated waste will be either recycled or reutilized," Asprilla said in a release.
The policy was one of the campaign promises made by mayor Gustavo Petro, who took office on January 1.
Over 95% of the 7,000t/d of waste produced in Bogotá currently goes untreated. This has a socio-economic as well as an environmental impact, as the city's main landfill, Doña Juana, is located in one of the poorest of Bogotá's districts, Asprilla said.
The new program will focus on an educational campaign, as well as the development of a separated waste collection system that will require changes to the city's current garbage contracts, the release reads.
