Water Resources | Financing | Government/Regulations | Irrigation/Flood ControlThe cloud seeding program that the Chilean government plans to carry out to tackle the severe drought impacting the country's central region has received financial support to the tune of 4bn pesos (US$8.34mn).
Funding will come from both public and private sources, the agriculture ministry said in a press release.
Experts are working to develop the necessary equipment to carry out the cloud seeding initiative, announced last month, said agriculture minister Luis Mayol.
The three-year plan could require up to 1.6bn pesos each year from the north-central regions included in the plan, namely III, IV, and VI. The program is expected to begin on May 1, and could increase rainfall by 10-20%.
LONG-TERM MEASURES
The government has also announced a long-term national irrigation program that aims to increase the number of dams and reservoirs in the country. The program expects to double the amount of stored water in the next 15 years.
Mayol, together with finance minister Felipe Larraín, announced public funding for the 28bn-peso Vallehermoso reservoir in region IV, which will increase the region's irrigation area by an additional 1,500ha.
The government also approved 14bn pesos to enclose the 41km Azapa canal in the valley of the same name in northernmost region XV, a statement from the finance ministry reads.
