While Brazil's oil sector continues to enjoy success after success, the country's power sector has faced a number of recent challenges. Authorities are continuing to investigate the cause of a massive blackout that left 18 Brazilian states in the dark on November 10.
A triple short circuit on one of the main transmission lines and two connected substations could have been responsible for the problem, Roberto Brandão, an electric power expert at Rio de Janeiro Federal University (UFRJ), told BNamericas this week.
"The transmission system is designed to handle short circuits. But a sequential triple short circuit is capable of dropping an entire transmission line," he said.
