European global connectivity provider Equant is in talks for a possible business relationship with internet services megacompany Google (Nasdaq: GOOG), Equant president for sales and marketing in the Americas Mack Treece revealed to BNamericas Wednesday.

"We're in talks with Google about some things. I can't talk about [what things in particular], but it's kind of their next evolution as a company, as they begin to grow, there are some things that could be of interest," said Treece on the second day of a two-day stop in Santiago, Chile.

There has been a lot of talk about Google entering the VoIP space and BNamericas pressed Treece about this possibility. He confirmed that he considers Equant to be the only company in the world capable of meeting Google's needs at short notice. "[No one else] could do it quickly. Not without multiple partnerships. And Google cares about speed. They move very fast, much faster than Microsoft or Yahoo."

If true, this would seem to confirm the idea that the Google-Equant talks are indeed about providing VoIP services.

Google has been expanding its core business beyond internet searching, with one of its most recent new services being PC-to-PC internet telephony product GoogleTalk.

Many analysts consider the introduction of VoIP service by Google a strong possibility. According to ZDnet, Google met with several voice service providers earlier this year, though details of the talks were not made public.

The use of services such as Equant's is considered likely should Google make a foray into the VoIP arena, as building their own network "would likely cost billions of dollars and take years to implement," according to Evan Hansen a writer for online tech news service CNET.
