The governments of Argentina and Brazil will decide independently which digital TV standard each nation should choose but have agreed to work to implement a single standard for the Mercosur customs union in the future, Argentine newspaper Infobae reported.
After a meeting between Brazilian and Argentine officials, both delegations agreed each country should decide on the digital TV standard that best suits the technology available to them.
Nonetheless Brazilian presidential chief of staff Dilma Rousseff said the two countries would work together to coordinate a single system for Mercosur in the future.
Argentina's communications ministry SeCom has recently created a committee to advise the government on which digital TV standard the nation should adopt.
The government is expected to decide between two digital TV standard options: the ATSC standard currently used in the US, Mexico, Canada and South Korea; and Europe's DVB standard.
Brazilian authorities are expected to select the country's digital TV standard within the next months.
Mercosur is made up of Brazil, Argentina, Paraguay and Uruguay.
