Bogotá-based Carbones del Cerrejón LLC (Cerrejón) is a mining and integrated transport operation, comprising a thermal coal open pit mine, a 150km railroad and a seaport capable of handling 180,000t vessels. The mine is located in northern Colombia's Guajira department, it produces more than 32Mt/y of coal and is comprised of several deposits: Patilla, Tabaco, La Puente, Oreganal, Tajo 100 and Comuneros. Cerrejón's coal is used for power generation sector, particularly in the Atlantic market, in North America, Europe and Latin America and to a lesser degree in the Pacific. A small portion is also supplied for industrial use and domestic heating. Carbones del Cerrejón's associated company, CMC Coal Marketing Company, is the exclusive global marketer of the product. Founded in 1975, Carbones del Cerrejon is equally owned by Anglo-Australian resource group BHP Billiton, Glencore and Anglo American of South Africa.
