Boleo mine permit confusion reaches Mexico’s senate
Concerns over the future of Korea Resources’ (Kores) Boleo mine in Mexico reached the senate, with one lawmaker warning closure would impact jobs.
Audelia Villarreal Zavala, conservative PAN party senator for Baja California Sur state where the mine is located, presented a proposal to the upper house urging the government to reconsider its position regarding Boleo, and authorize an environmental permit.
“Our concern before this uncertain situation is the future of the residents of Mulegé [municipality] who today more than ever require our support and solidarity to maintain this source of employment so important in Baja California Sur,” Villarreal said.
The proposal comes amid concerns over the future of the copper-cobalt-zinc mine following comments by President Andrés Manuel López Obrador (AMLO).
In a press conference last week, AMLO said he had rejected a permit application by Boleo’s owners.
“A short time ago they were requesting a permit for the Boleo mine, saying they are going to close and they need a permit for 300, 400ha, and I told them no, that we cannot continue handing out these concessions,” he said.
But environment ministry Semarnat – which manages environmental permitting – later said no decision has been made regarding the application.
The ministry received an application from Boleo operator Minera y Metalúrgica del Boleo (MMB) in 2019 to extend an existing environmental permit to allow it to mine an additional 446ha of land within its existing concessions, it said.
MMB, which is controlled by Kores, warned it would be forced to halt operations unless the permit is approved.
SENATE DEBATE
In response to senator Villarreal’s proposal, Jesús Lucía Trasviña Waldenrath of AMLO’s ruling Morena party and a member of the environmental, natural resources and climate change senate committee, confirmed no final decision had been made.
Morena senator Napoleón Gómez Urrutia, who heads national mining union SNTMMSSRM, said he would be meeting with MMB managers to discuss the issue and “resolve and clarify this conflict which I think is the product of a misunderstanding, above all.”
