In recent months several consultancies and ICT multinationals have hinted that they expect improved business in 2019. For example, Brazil is bouncing back from recession, and some say the new USMCA North American trade agreement could trigger increased tech investment in Mexico.
Also in Brazil, national innovation and research financing agency Finep recently raised funds from abroad for the first time, garnering US$1.5 billion in loans to drive R&D over the next five years.
No government has forgotten the importance of addressing the digital divide, and national connectivity plans continue to plod along, but as always it is the private sector that is really pushing development in the industry and if anything these firms will be stepping up the pace in 2019.
Also, in most markets there are important ongoing regulatory discussions and processes, such as the splitting of América Móvil operations in Mexico, the PLC 79 sector reform bill in Brazil and the recent cybercrimes bill in Chile.
