Telefónica saw its pay TV client base in Brazil fall by 7% between 1Q16 and 1Q17, yet revenues in that segment were up 29% year on year in euros. The improved revenue figure could be partially due to exchange rate effects, but Telefónica also reports strong uptake of IPTV subscriptions in the last year, up 57%.
This is one example of how operators can turn to new technologies and premium services to offset challenging economic scenarios, and could inspire peers in healthy markets to accelerate their digital evolution.
At the same time, the OTT movement is opening up the pay TV segment to a greater variety of players, and adding to the incentives for telcos to upgrade their networks.
