Aserri landfill hearing tied up in court

A legal claim has postponed indefinitely a public hearing that Costa Rica's national environment technical department (Setena) was to have held Saturday (Feb.28) regarding the Aserri landfill planned for San Jose province, La Prensa Libre reported. Canadian-Costa Rican consortium Empresas Berthierville Incorporadas (EBI) is behind the 26ha, 400t/d landfill, which would receive waste from the cities of Desamparados, Alajuelita, Aserri and Escazu. It would have a useful life of 20-25 years and would replace the area's saturated Rio Azul landfill scheduled to close by October 2005. The province also sends waste to the EBI-run La Carpio landfill that opened in 1999 and receives some 600t/d of waste. The paper quoted EBI de Costa Rica general manager Juan Carlos Obando as saying that they expect the courts to greenlight the hearing for Aserri, which Obando contends would operate in a similar fashion to La Carpio. Setena must still approve EBI's project.
