Brazil to support solid waste mgt. efforts
Bnamericas Published: Friday, January 28, 2005
Brazil's government has signed a US$125,000 memorandum of understanding to support solid waste management in Haiti's capital Port-au-Prince as part of the World Bank's "low-income countries under stress grant" for the country's reconstruction. Brazil's contribution will help reduce the risk to public health posed by the virtual absence of solid waste management services in the country, according to the World Bank (WB). The grant's objectives are to help establish effective waste collection within selected poor areas of Port-au Prince through both a "learning by doing" mechanism for capacity building, plus the preparation of long-term service delivery plans (budgets, training needs, integrated municipal and national plans). The grant will set up community-based networks to collect waste on a neighborhood basis using tools and equipment that are locally affordable (e.g., plastic bags to contain waste and wheelbarrows to collect waste). Collected waste will then be taken to bins that are accessible for collection by waste collection vehicles operated by the capital's municipal waste collection entity, "Service Métropolitain de Collecte des Résidus Solides." Local NGOs will help with the design, implementation and monitoring of slum waste collection systems. These pilot collections will serve up to 15,000 people. Port-au-Prince is home to an estimated 2.5 million people, where slum areas present special challenges to waste collection due to the very narrow alleys and streets that are not accessible to waste collection vehicles, according to the statement.
