Canada Expected to Start Anti-Dumping Probe

Canada is expected to start an anti-dumping investigation into exports of carbon plate steel from Brazil and other countries on March 28, Gazeta Mercantil (Brazil) reported. CSN (Rio de Janeiro), Usiminas (Belo Horizonte) and Cosipa (Sao Paulo) are Brazil's exporters of the product, though Gazeta said Usiminas would not be affected much as it has reduced exports to meet booming domestic demand. The carbon plate steel probe is the latest of many into steel imports launched by Canadian authorities at the request of Canada's steel companies. Meanwhile, Gazeta reported the Brazilian government is worried by a "protectionist offensive" from the US steel lobby which President George Bush is reportedly prepared to accept by approving trade-barrier legislation allowed under GATT rules.
