Copper reps, Europeans discuss REACH

Representatives of Chilean copper companies and government bodies met with European Commission experts this week to present the former's arguments against the REACH system that could restrict copper shipments, Chile's Diario Financiero reported. "We believe there are going to be changes, considering this regulation is undergoing open discussion," the business daily quoted Patricio Cartagena, VP of Chile's copper commission Cochilco, as saying. Other representatives from Chile included Eduardo Loyola of the Mining Council, Lorenzo Menéndez of state minerals company Enami and Santiago Torres of state copper company Codelco. Other delegates from APEC (Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation) countries participated in the discussions. REACH - registration, evaluation and authorization of chemicals - would monitor the entry of chemical preparations and substances into the EU, including copper.
