Govt. seeks to recover domain names

Mexico's federal government is facing a legal battle to recover the domain names mexico.com and mexico.com.mx, registered by private users, local newspaper El Norte reported. Ramy Schwartz, a native of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, is asking for US$500,000 to return mexico.com, registered by him in 1997, while Argentine businessman Mariano Soler of Brokers Internet uses mexico.com.mx to register hotel reservations in Mexico City. The government will present its case to a group of independent experts in conflict resolution authorized by the global domain name registration authority ICANN. Individuals are also reported to have already purchased domain names of politicians that have been raised as possible presidential candidates in the future, including martasahagun.com, robertomadrazo.com and santiagocreel.com.
