MasterCard ups LatAm billing 27% in Q2

US card issuer MasterCard (NYSE: MA) saw second quarter gross billing rise 26.9% in Latin America and the Caribbean to US$29bn compared to 2Q05, the company said in a press release. Worldwide, MasterCard's gross billing increased 16.4% in the second quarter to US$485bn due to strong performance in emerging markets such as Latin America and the Caribbean, South Asia and Middle East Africa. Purchase volume in Latin America and the Caribbean increased 30.6% in Q2 to US$14bn. The number of Maestro cards grew 17.6% in the region, reaching 97 million at the end of June, the company said. Last year, MasterCard's gross billing in Latin America and the Caribbean grew 32.5% to US$98bn compared to 2004.
