Bnamericas Published: Wednesday, June 09, 1999
The value of Peru's mining exports would US$3.01bn this year, US$273mn (10%) more than the US$2.74bn earned in 1998, Augusto Baertl, president of the country's National Mining, Petroleum and Energy Society (Sonaminpet) predicted. However, the figures are based on 1999 metal prices staying the same as in 1998, when in fact they have generally fallen. Baertl said the value of gold sales would increase by 30.2%, silver 3.4% as well as zinc. No separate dollar figures were given. He predicted copper and iron sales would fall 8.9% each against an international decline in sales of 37.8%, while lead would fall 9.2%. Physical production of gold would increase by 39.7%, copper 5.5%, silver 3.5%, tin 4.9%, zinc 2.2% and lead 1.3%, while iron output would fall 18.3%.
