Minister starts up PSE Sullana II, III electrification ops

Peru's energy and mines minister Glodomiro Sánchez has inaugurated the PSE Sullana electrification project's second and third stages, bringing more power to northwestern Peru's Piura province, the ministry said in a statement. The works required total investments of US$677,083, including financial support provided by the Japan Bank for International Cooperation ( JBIC) and Peru's government. The second and third stages of PSE Sullana will bring power to 40,000 citizens in 62 towns. In the past five years, the government has provided electricity to 123,000 citizens in 350 towns of Piura department with a total investment of US$20.5mn, according to a separate ministry statement. Piura department's electrification rate was 61.6% at end-2001. Sánchez said it will reach 72% by the end of this year, according to the statement.
