Quitaracsa files for CDM registration
Bnamericas Published: Wednesday, February 07, 2007
Peruvian generator Quitaracsa has filed a registration request with the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) for its 115MW hydro project in Ancash department, according to the UNFCCC website. If the request is approved, Quitaracsa will qualify as a clean development mechanism (CDM) project, making the project eligible to receive carbon credits tradable on the international market under the Kyoto Protocol. "We have secured all the required permits from Peru's government," company general manager Juan Solidoro told BNamericas. Construction of the US$120mn project is due to begin in July and will take three years, said Solidoro, adding the financing and PPA process is wrapping up. Quitaracsa's CO2 emission reductions are estimated at 249,463t/y for the first crediting period from 2010-17, UNFCCC reported. Quitaracsa received authorization from Peru's national environment council Conam for the receipt of carbon credits in January 2005. The project will connect to Peru's SEIN grid through an 84km, 220kV transmission line and produce an annual 458GWh, according to the company's website.
