YPFB to complete gas connections month-end
Bnamericas Published: Wednesday, April 23, 2003
Bolivia's state oil company YPFB will complete the installation of 14,000 residential natural gas connections by May 31, compared to the original January completion date, chairman Raul Lema announced via government news service ABI. The connections were made in the cities of La Paz, El Alto, Oruro, Potosi and Camiri. A further 5,000 connections will follow in June; in El Alto, Oruro, Potosi and Tarija. Work in La Paz is being hindered by the fact that 120km of branch lines to industrial and residential poles are yet to be built, financing for which would have to come from a second stage of the project, Lema said. The government's full plan is to make 250,000 residential connections in the next five years, and the next stage will require US$300mn, he said, adding the hydrocarbons ministry is drawing up bidding rules for second phase contracts. Meanwhile, various parts of Bolivia are feeling the effects of a shortage of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), which has seen price speculation and imports from Brazil, local press reported. YPFB blamed the situation on distributors not buying ahead in sufficient time, and on the ever-growing use of LPG in motor vehicles.
