América Móvil leading Mexico mobile portability

Telcel, the local unit of Mexico's América Móvil, led mobile number portability in December with 54.5% of all numbers ported and was the only carrier with net gains during the month, according to official figures.

The company, the leader of the country's mobile telecommunications market with 63% of lines, received 1.02mn numbers in December, while it ceded 609,122 for a net gain of 406,642, according to data from local regulator IFT.

Telefónica, the country's second largest operator by subscribers, received 482,791 numbers while it lost 537,533, for a balance of minus 54,742. The local unit of US giant AT&T saw the largest loss of numbers with minus 344,619, after losing 694,249 to other operators and receiving 349,630, IFT added.

Mexico reported a total of 21.3mn numbers ported during 2018, an 11.5% increase from 19.1mn during 2017.
