Argentina, US ink energy cooperation deal

Bnamericas

Argentina and the US signed an agreement to strengthen energy trade and cooperation between both countries in non-conventional hydrocarbons and in nuclear and renewable energy as well as energy efficiency.

US energy undersecretary Daniel Poneman visited Argentina and met with planning minister Julio de Vido to sign the deal. Both highlighted the significance of the Vaca Muerta formation and its ability to supply Argentina with natural gas for 200 years and oil for 118 years, according to a ministry statement.

"This is one of the most important agreements that the two countries have signed in the past few years," de Vido said. It will "provide an institutional framework for the deals that companies from both countries are negotiating."

Poneman also visited Chile and met with energy minister Máximo Pacheco to boost bilateral energy cooperation and discussed the US shale gas prospects to export to Chile, the ministry said in a release.

Pacheco will meet US energy secretary Ernest Moniz by the end of June to sign an energy agreement, during President Michelle Bachelet's visit to the US.
