AT A GLANCE: Wind gains traction in Mexico

"Wind power represents a major opportunity across both the north and the south of Mexico, with the potential to produce 92TWh of electricity per year by 2030."

That's according to the Renewable Energy Prospects: Mexico report prepared by energy ministry Sener and the International Renewable Energy Agency.

To achieve a 46% share of renewables in electricity generation, Mexico is likely to see the greatest deployment in wind (30GW) and solar photovoltaic (30GW), highlights the document.

The authors, however, point to hurdles to further tap the country's wind potential, such as lack of transmission capacity and the need for greater public engagement to tackle issues related to rights of way and compensation.

Sener's 2015-29 renewable energies outlook reveals that wind power generation in the first half of 2015 totaled 4,242GWh or 2.8% of total output.

In related news, Madrid-based Gamesa said it had secured a new order for the supply of 200MW for a wind farm in the northern Mexican state of Coahuila.

The company said it will install and commission 95 of its G114-2.1MW turbines which are slated for delivery this half. The park is due to become operational by year-end.

Additional details were not disclosed.
