Bachelet rolls out connectivity, infrastructure projects for southern Chile

Chile's President Michelle Bachelet has signed a decree to invest 519bn pesos (US$929mn) in the development of southern Aysén region (XI).

The development plan includes a project to connect the Aysén and Magallanes regions and the Palena province with a fiber optic network.

Spending will also be allocated for the completion of the paving of highway Ruta 7 Norte and the beginning of highway 7 Sur. Access will be improved to the town of Puerto Cisnes, while new border control Los Huemules complex will be built and the runway and terminal will be improved at the Balmaceda aerodrome, with the possible addition of a second runway.

The plan will also include the construction of the new Chile Chico and Cochrane hospitals, the implementation of conservation projects to protect local rivers and the creation of a nature reserve.
