Brazil advances three positions in innovation and technology ranking
This is a machine translation of a press release by Brazil's Ministry of Communications
Brazil rose three positions in the Global Innovation Index (IGI), from 57th place to 54th in the 2022 edition of the Global Innovation Index. The study is prepared by the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), a specialized agency of the United Nations.
The result of the study reflects the positive measures that Brazil has been taking to improve its innovation environment, while showing the challenges that still lie ahead. The government has encouraged research, technological development and improvement as fundamental vectors for increasing the economy's productivity and improving the well-being of the Brazilian population.
At the launch event of the Global Innovation Index 2022, the Minister of Science, Technology and Innovations, Paulo Alvim, highlighted the advances made by Brazil in this sector. “In particular, on topics such as digital transformation and government, investments in enabling technologies and support for innovation in strategic sectors such as agriculture, energy, health,” he said.
According to the 2021 document, Brazil has advanced and is in 57th place out of 132 countries. In 2019, it occupied the 66th position and, in 2020, it was in the 62nd. In the context of 18 economies in Latin America and the Caribbean, the country is in fourth place, behind Chile (1st), Mexico (2nd) and Costa Rica (3rd). In 2021, the top ten countries for innovation were Switzerland, Sweden, the United States, the United Kingdom, the Republic of Korea, the Netherlands, Finland, Singapore, Denmark and Germany.
The Global Innovation Index (GII) is calculated from the average of two sub-indices. The first is innovation inputs, which assesses the elements of the economy that enable and facilitate the development of innovative activities, grouped into five pillars: Institutions; human capital and research; infrastructure; market sophistication and business sophistication.
The second sub-index is innovation products, which captures the effective result of innovative activities within the economy and is divided into two pillars: knowledge and technology products and creative products.
Since its creation in 2007, the IGI has become a reference in the evaluation of innovation and a pillar in the formulation of economic policies, leading an increasing number of governments to carry out systematic analyzes of their annual results in terms of innovation and to elaborate policies. aimed at improving its performance in the Index. The ranking was also recognized by the United Nations Economic and Social Council, which in its 2019 resolution on science, technology and innovation for development defines it as a reference instrument for evaluating innovation in relation to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). ).
