Brazilian power firms strike on eve of World Cup
Workers at Brazilian power utilities Furnas and Chesf have begun an indefinite strike in seven states over a pay dispute.
Operations have been paralyzed in the states of Pernambuco, Alagoas, Ceará, Rio Grande do Norte, Sergipe, Brasília and Goias, according to a statement from the Sindefurnas union.
It was unclear whether the strike would affect power services.
The decision to stop work comes after the firms' parent company, state-run conglomerate Eletrobras, refused the union's demand for a higher allocation of profits to workers.
Eletrobras could not be reached for comment on Tuesday.
The move comes amid widespread strikes that have swept Brazil on the eve of the World Cup. The actions have affected public transport, schools, police and waste management services.
