Brazil's Copasa unveils US$1.5bn investment plan

Copasa, the water utility of Brazil’s Minas Gerais state, will invest 8.10bn reais (US$1.53bn) in 2023-27.

"The record investments approved by the board are in line with the company's business plan, its contractual commitments, as well as meeting the universalization targets proposed in the new sanitation framework," the state government said in a press release.

According to the regulatory framework, cities and states need to reach complete water and sewage coverage for their populations by 2033. If they fail to reach these goals, they could lose access to financing from the federal government.

In terms of access to treated water Copasa’s coverage ratio is 99.4% and its ratio for sewage collection and treatment stands at 90.5%.

Having been reelected in October 2022, governor Romeu Zema has said he will try to privatize Copasa during his second term.
