Brazil's CSP exports US$178mn of steel slabs
Export revenue from Brazil's Companhia Siderúrgica do Pecém (CSP) plant (pictured) reached some US$178mn in 2016, local paper O Povo reported, citing data from Ceará state's international trade office (CIN-CE).
The plant in the northeastern state went online in June and output of steel slabs began on June 20.
CSP shipped 787,400t of slabs between June 20, 2016 and January 24, 2017. In December alone, CSP steel slab exports passed the 500,000t mark.
The CSP mill helped to boost total exports from the northeastern state by 23.7% in 2016, according to the report.
IMPORTS
In 2016, the company imported over US$100mn in inputs, most of which was machinery and equipment. According to the report, the mill uses over 8Mt of raw materials to produce the 3Mt/y of slabs as per the design for the first phase. Output can be increased to 6Mt/y in phase two.
Local mining giant Vale holds a 50% stake in CSP, while Korean steelmakers Dongkuk and Posco hold 30% and 20% interests, respectively.
