The Chamber of Deputies approved today in its first constitutional process, with 100 votes in favor, 26 against and 20 abstentions, the bill that will allow the small mining products of the National Mining Company (Enami) to be treated in installations other than the Ventanas Division.

This initiative makes it possible to make viable the definition of the board of directors of the state copper company, which, by majority, approved in June to advance in the cessation of the processes of the smelter located in the commune of Puchuncaví.

“Although it is a process that has not finished, because now the discussion is transferred to the Senate, it is progress for the plans that Codelco has defined. Along this path, it is worth highlighting the fruitful dialogue with the union leaders, whose understanding of the moment that the smelter is experiencing in the Puchuncaví-Quinteros area allowed for a labor agreement supported by the workers of the plant before the scenario of the cessation of operations.

This is an industrial reconversion initiative that we are going to execute well, with a just transition that will respect both people and communities,” according to chairman, Máximo Pacheco.

Pacheco followed the legislative process from Hamburg, Germany, where he is visiting the Aurubis copper smelter and refinery, the second largest in Europe and which operates with high environmental standards in the middle of the city.

“We came to know the high standards that this plant manages and that provide full security and confidence. As a country, we must continue to persevere to develop more installed capacity for copper smelters, with clean technologies that allow us to add more value to our mineral, generate new and good jobs, and expand our productive matrix to be a better Chile,” said the chairman.

Meanwhile, the CEO, André Sougarret, explained that “Codelco has its teams deployed in the Quintero and Puchuncaví area to explain the process we are in, in addition to communicating the fair transition plans for workers and communities. We want to convey that we will continue to promote the development of this area as members of this community. We now hope that the project will be reviewed and approved in the Senate.”
