Chile 4G connections up by more than half

Chile 4G accesses increased 52.9% in the 12 months ending September, or by 4.8mn connections for a total of 13.9mn, according to the latest report from watchdog Subtel.

4G accesses represent 77.6% of total internet connections. 3G connections fell 30.8% over the same period.

Total fixed and mobile internet connections reached 21.1mn, up 17.5% or 3.1mn accesses compared to the same time last year.

The total penetration rate went from 97.5% in September 2017 to 113.4% this year.

Fixed internet grew 4% to 3.1mn over the period.

The study showed that 84.9% of accesses to the internet are via a mobile device and 79.6% via a smartphone.

Mobile voice traffic rose 12.7%. The penetration of mobile devices rose to 129.7%, or 24.1mn subscribers.

Entel, Movistar and Claro accounted for 84.3% of the market.

The number of fixed lines fell 6.4% and fixed voice traffic (local to local and local to mobile) fell 24.3%.

Pay TV penetration reached 58.4% for 3.35mn subscribers. VTR was the largest player with a 32.2% market share followed by DirecTV (20.3%), the data shows.
