October 2022
The World Energy Council (WEC) elected Claudio Seebach, Executive President of Generadoras de Chile, as Vice Chair of Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC) for the period 2022 to 2025, succeeding Claudia Cronenbold, who served in the position for two terms.
The announcement was made during the Executive Assembly of the World Energy Council and the Energy Trilemma Summit, an event organized together with the Scottish Government, which took place between October 12 and 13 in the city of Aberdeen.
WEC also revealed that Dr. Michael Howard will be the new President of the Council of Officers (Board of Directors), succeeding Jean-Marie Dauger, whose term expired after serving in the role since September 2019.
Claudio Seebach is an electrical industrial engineer from the Catholic University and has a master's degree in Engineering from Stanford University. Co-founder of Enseña Chile and Choose Educar, in addition to the company B Próxima Servicios. He was also national director of Un Techo para Chile, executive director of the UC Public Policy Center and Executive Secretary of the Consortium for State Reform.
From his work in the energy industry, he has led the agreement and the decarbonisation agenda for the electricity sector. Apart from his position at Generadoras de Chile, today he holds a position as director on the board of the local chapter of the World Energy Council.
Fairer transitions
The Executive Assembly of the World Energy Council and Summit of the Energy Trilemma, brought together the global community of WEC and the main agents of change, coming from almost 100 countries.
Under the slogan "Transformative solutions in turbulent times", the aim of the event was to identify the opportunities to achieve just energy transitions in a fast-paced and divided world.
“This is an important time for energy. As we experience the first demand-driven energy crisis, war, Covid and climate change, it is clear that energy affects all aspects of life. The global energy agenda cannot move forward by oscillating from one priority to another. Successful energy transitions can only be achieved by keeping a focus on all pillars of the World Energy Trilemma – security, affordability and sustainability – to ensure that no one is left behind,” read a WEC statement.
This was the first face-to-face meeting of the entire Council community in three years, just as the organization turns a century old.
