Colombia announces significant onshore gas find

Independent Colombian company Clean Energy has made two onshore natural gas discoveries in the northern department of Córdoba.

In a series of social media posts, energy minister Irene Vélez said the accumulations were identified at the Brujo 1X and Mágico 1X prospects in the Sinú-9 block.

The minister also said the wells could produce up to 70Mf3/d.

"These new discoveries will serve a nitrogenous fertilizer production plant which could met 65% of the national demand," Vélez said.

In a separate video, Vélez added: "By increasing the national production of fertilizers we would be responding to very high demand, pushed by rural reforms.

"Fertilizers are very expensive now due to the war between Russia and Ukraine, which makes this [discovery] convenient for Colombia."

According to Vélez, up to 2,500t of fertilizers could be produced from 40Mf3/d of gas, enough to cover up to 90% of national consumption.
